In 2003, the European Parliament issued a directive banning the use of six hazardous substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). The directive's objective is to prevent the presence of hazardous materials in waste once the product is disposed of.

The worldwide electronics industry, then, is committed to adopting the RoHS.
Israel, as an export-oriented country, must prepare itself accordingly.
